Star Wars Galaxies (SWG) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set in the Star Wars universe. Originally developed by Sony Online Entertainment and LucasArts, it launched on June 26, 2003, and ran until its official servers shut down on December 15, 2011. It remains playable today through free community-run emulator servers like SWG Infinity.
Why Was Star Wars Galaxies Special?
Unlike most MMOs of its era — or since — Star Wars Galaxies was a true sandbox game. There were no predetermined classes. Instead, players chose from over 34 professions and could mix and match skills to create entirely unique character builds. A player could be part Bounty Hunter, part Doctor, part Musician. The freedom was unprecedented.
Key features that set SWG apart from every other MMO:
- Player-Driven Economy: Every weapon, piece of armour, vehicle, and piece of furniture was crafted by real players. There were no NPC vendors selling endgame gear. Master Weaponsmiths, Armorsmiths, and other crafters ran real businesses.
- Player Cities: Guilds and groups of players could build actual cities on any planet, complete with shuttleports, cantinas, hospitals, and civic structures. These cities were governed by elected mayors.
- 34+ Professions: From combat roles like Commando, Rifleman, and Teras Kasi Artist to lifestyle professions like Architect, Chef, and Image Designer, the depth of choice was unmatched.
- The Jedi Grind: In the Pre-CU era, unlocking Jedi was the rarest and most prestigious achievement in the game. It required dedication, exploration, and mastering multiple professions through a mysterious unlock path.
- Jump to Lightspeed: The space expansion let players pilot ships, engage in dogfights, and explore space sectors in fully 3D combat — a feature most modern MMOs still lack.
- Social Gameplay: Entertainers (Musicians and Dancers) healed mind wounds in cantinas. Doctors and Combat Medics healed physical wounds. The game actively encouraged social interaction and interdependency between players.
What Happened to Star Wars Galaxies?
SWG went through three major eras:
- Pre-CU (2003–2005): The original sandbox experience with deep profession trees and player freedom. Widely considered the golden age of SWG.
- CU / Combat Upgrade (April 2005): A controversial overhaul that changed combat mechanics and added level-based progression. Many players left.
- NGE / New Game Enhancements (November 2005): A radical redesign that replaced the 34-profession skill system with 9 fixed classes, turning the game into a more traditional theme park MMO. This change alienated the majority of the remaining player base.
Sony Online Entertainment shut down all official SWG servers on December 15, 2011, when the licence agreement with LucasArts expired. But the community was not ready to let go.
Can You Still Play Star Wars Galaxies?
Yes. Star Wars Galaxies is fully playable in 2026 through community-run emulator servers built on the open-source SWGEmu project. The largest and most active Pre-CU server is SWG Infinity, with 800+ weekly active players.

What is SWGEmu?
SWGEmu (Star Wars Galaxies Emulator) is an open-source project that reverse-engineered the original SWG server software. Started in 2004, the project enables community developers to host fully functional Star Wars Galaxies servers. SWGEmu focuses on recreating the Pre-CU version of the game — the era the community loved most.

How Does Star Wars Galaxies Compare to Other MMOs?
SWG occupies a unique space in the MMO landscape. While games like World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, and The Old Republic focus on scripted storylines and predetermined classes, SWG gives you a sandbox. You are not following a developer’s story — you are creating your own.
If you have been looking for games like Star Wars Galaxies, the truth is: nothing has truly replicated the SWG formula. But the original game is still here, still free, and still thriving. See how SWG Infinity compares to other servers in our server comparison.
